It's a new dawn

Blog - JUG Meetings and Events Written by Techbot | 26.01.12 Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Yes. It's a year since we set-up the IJUG. We kick started with the launch party for 1.6 and it's fitting we start afresh with a new year and a new Joomla!!! And a new committee.

So who wants to get involved? We will need a chairman and treasurer at least. I will be standing down to give someone else a chance to steer the JUG. Nominations and voting can take place in the forum.

Above All- Be Cool

On Saturday 7th Lisa and I visited the Cork Coder Dojo as founded by James Whelton and Bill Liao.

When we arrived the place was buzzing with kids and their parents, as they played games, drew digital pictures and coded in html, css, and scratch.

JoomlaDay Ireland 2012

Blog - JUG Meetings and Events Written by Techbot | 14.12.11 Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Just a quick note to wish everybody a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Joomla Tree

And I'd like to take the opportunity to make a call to action for the new year. On Dec 20th, Joomla 2.5 beta is being released and with it, Joomla enters a new era with a new long term support release. The Irish Joomla User Group will be barely a year old (our first meeting was to celebrate the launch of the short term release 1.6) . We ‘ve had our ups and downs like any other. I for one have appreciated being part of the Joomla community.

Microsoft have for a while now offered us a premises, speakers, and sponsorship help when we are ready to run our own Joomla Day Ire. I think we could do this in the Spring. We need to start thinking about what we want now. The Microsoft HQ can hold 120 people. If adult education VECs are turning to Joomla! will this be enough places?

What kind of talks would we give?

Who will give them? I have spoken for two hours and it was easy, and I spoke for 10 minutes and it was really difficult. It depends on whether your audience is a group of developers, or first-time users. The speakers will need to practice. Do you want your business involved? Can your employee represent you in front of a group of 120?

If you are a student of Joomla! what kind of workshops would you like to attend? Hidden secrets of the JCE editor or what about CSS and Templating for 2.5, or maybe Javascript: Mootools versus Jquery ? Hopefully for the Devs, Ryan Ozimek can takes us through Joomla as a platform concept, but what about talks for the non-technical?

  • I will be inviting various educators.
  • I could also give a talk on Joomla and open data which might attract some county councillors and others interested in the open data initiative in Ireland.
  • Do we contact every other web dev company that uses Joomla! and maybe get some of the Developers from England or Europe over?
  • Ryan Ozimek from OSM, the legal body behind Joomla, has confirmed that he will attend.
  • What if we got Brian Teeman from http://brian.teeman.net/ ?
  • Redshop does the Joomla!Day circuit too I think, as does JCE Editor and Virtuemart.

I can find out who else is available to give a talk. Some of these guys need expenses paid. Others will be sponsored by their companies if a large potential audience is present (I think).

I can do the paperwork and having met so many great people at the Joomla!Day UK I know who to contact there to get things done.

It all depends on how many people directly respond letting us know what they want. And for the companies or freelancers out there who want to give a talk or promote a service to get in contact.

I intend to hire a publicist/events person to manage this and use the sponsorship money to pay for it. This is going to be a well run event that will cater for web professionals, hobbyists, entrepreneurs and educators. Joomla is well known enough that sites like Silicon Repubic might attend and report.

Would you buy a ticket for an all-day Joomla extravaganza?

There will be loads to learn, loads of opportunities to network, to promote your services and jive about Joomla!

See you all in the new year

Joomla and Open Data in Ireland

Blog - Latest News Written by Techbot | 07.12.11 Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

A big thanks to Distllr.com for organising the hackathon on Dec 3rd. It was attended by four people from the Joomla User group Ireland no less and I even got to make a quick unprepared presentation to the developers and the distillr team. Ireland is behind in the open data movement but I believe the Irish Joomla community can play a strong part in fixing this. I have written a blog post over at emc23.com  http://www.emc23.com/web-development-blog/270-joomla-and-open-data-in-ireland and have begun developing a blog at http://www.scoop.it/t/open-data-development-with-joomla which will deal with open data across the globe not just Ireland.

If you have any questions or queries or would like to help in writing  the code that will help apps developers use open data then just pop into the forums and let us know. Meanwhile the next open data conference in Ireland is Dec 8th organised by Dublinked (one of the leading innovators for open data in Ireland) http://www.dublinked.com/?q=DublinkedPlanningWorkshop08Dec

Joomla for Jobs and Schools Update

Blog - Latest News Written by Techbot | 20.11.11 Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

First thing was to work out the similarities and differences between the two (if any) so a streamlined workflow can be designed. For the moment, let's treat them as one. It's likely that Joomla for jobs and Joomla for schools are simply two sides of the same coin.

I've begun a lengthy and extremely enlightening series of discussions with Bernie Goldbach, multimedia co-ordinator for Limerick Institute of Technology and we have decided to ensure we chat for 20 minutes each week to keep each other up to date and brainstorm, as we turn this extremely important initiative into a reality. Meanwhile I am in regular contact with the Joomla leadership team to ensure maximum co-operation and synergy.

I have begun building a 36 module modular courseware system that will ultimately cover everything you need to know about Joomla. From a novice, who simply wants to get a start-up business online, to a Joomla web developer ninja, this courseware will show you exactly what modules you need to master and how to go about this.

Joomla @ International Open Data Hack Day - Dublin

Blog - Latest News Written by Techbot | 20.11.11 Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Calling all my Joomla PHP developer friends. I've been invited to present my idea that Joomla would make a perfect entry point for new coders to Open Data at the Hackathon. What is Open Data? It's a bit like open source but it's about local government information, science data etc. It's pretty exciting stuff.

I could do with some help. I'm guessing the ultimate goal would be reusable libraries that other students could use to make new extensions but in the early stages a simple component or a few modules might be best. Maybe something that allows an admin to import csv files and display them in google maps or as a formatted table.

I'm looking for your ideas, advice etc. You can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
